Closing Note

Q1 is over. I am writing this on a Thursday afternoon in the first week of April. The windows in my office are open. There is a cup of tea on the desk that I have not yet drunk. I would like to close this first issue briefly.

This has been an issue about infrastructure, written before there is anything built on top of it, which is an unusual thing to publish and the reason I wanted to publish it. Every piece in it describes something that has to be true on the first day of a representation rather than the hundredth. The audit right has to be in the agreement you sign, not added later. The reconciliation habit has to exist before the first statement arrives. The folder has to be built before anyone walks into a room. None of that can be retrofitted, and all of it is easy to skip when nobody is watching, which at this stage is precisely the situation.

So it is written down. That is the whole purpose of a first issue. Somebody can hold this against me later, and I would rather they could.

What we are watching into Q2 is the shape of the summer. Campaign season opens. Partnerships negotiated in the winter shoot in the sun. The pace changes and the rooms get hotter, literally and otherwise. The next issue is called The Open Year, and it will look at what this work looks like in daylight, at scale. The quiet discipline of Q1 does not go away in Q2. It becomes the foundation under a much louder house.

One last thing. The best version of this job is eleven minutes long. Someone sends you two lines from a contract they have been sent directly and asks whether it is all right. You read it. You call them back. It is fine, and they go back to their day and think no more about it. Nothing happened. That is the work. It is why this house exists, and it is why almost none of what it does will ever be visible from outside.
